We’ll visit Florence’s ‘rive gauche’, the old but lively district on the other side of Arno with its characteristic restaurants, bars, artisan workshops and antique dealers. As we walk through its streets and squares we’ll visit two of its most famous churches: Santo Spirito and Carmine.

Palazzo Pitti - Florence

The Palaces of the Medici: Palazzo Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti

Cosimo I de’ Medici transferred the family residence to Palazzo Vecchio, and made it his political quarters. He also commissioned the construction of the Uffizi as the administrative center and the Vasari Corridor. This extraordinary aerial passageway, crossing the Arno river above the shops of Ponte Vecchio, permitted the Grand Dukes to move safely from Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti, the new residence of the family.

We’ll visit the Renaissance square of Santa Maria Novella with its famous Basilica. Santa Maria Novella is one the most beautiful churches of Florence with its impressive facade by Leon Battista Alberti. Inside there are works by Giotto, Masaccio and frescoes by Ghirlandaio. The Antique Pharmacy near the church was founded by the Dominican monks in the year 1221.

Roman Theater - Fiesole


Up in the hills above Florence lies Fiesole, the ancient Etruscan capital of the region since the VIIth century b.C. and a blooming city during under the Roman Empire. From these hills Leonardo da Vinci made his first experiments with human flight. In modern times Fiesole became an important cultural center frequented by Newton, Proust and Queen Victoria.

Villa la Petraia - Florence

The Medici Villas

The Medici built 24 villas in Tuscany. Originally farmhouses, as a countryside alternative for the hectic city life, these buildings became centers of political power for the Medici Grand Dukes. All villas are masterpieces of Renaissance architecture, filled with art collections and surrounded by lovely gardens which show us how gardening can be considered an art and plant collections can become art collections of historical value. We’ll visit the villas closest to Florence, Villa La Petraia and Villa di Castello.
