Cosimo I de’ Medici transferred the family residence to Palazzo Vecchio, which in turn became his political quarters. He also commissioned the construction of the Uffizi as the administrative center and the Vasari Corridor. This extraordinary aerial passageway, crossing the Arno river above the shops of Ponte Vecchio, permitted the Grand Dukes to move safely from Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti, the new residence of the family.
